Benefits of OpenID and Why Skylight has introduced this feature

Latest update: Skylight now supports OpenID, read the benefits.

Skylight now offers OpenID for signing up and logging in. Here are the benefits for you and your team:

Maintaining multiple usernames and passwords

Most users struggle to remember the multiple username and password combinations required to sign in to each of their favorite websites and web services. Not to mention that the password recovery process can be tedious or time consuming when all you want to do is to log in to a site. Normally users will use a variation of the same password at each of their favorite websites which poses as a security risk. With OpenID, you can use a single, existing account (from providers like Google, Yahoo, AOL or your own blog) to sign in to thousands of websites without ever needing to create another username and password, making it a safer and easier method of joining new sites.

You probably already have an OpenID

If you subscribe to Google, Yahoo, AOL, Flickr, Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal and many more then you probably already have an openID. Or you can get one from an OpenID provider like myOpenID. And it’s completely free!

Control your online identity

OpenID is an open standard that describes how users can be authenticated in a decentralized manner, meaning it is not controlled by any one website or service provider. You are in total control of what information is shared with websites that accept OpenID and you can also create multiple OpenIDs for different purposes. In essence it's your portable identity across the web. During the process you are redirected to your OpenID provider who simply tells us "yes, this is the person they say they are", and they never share any password data with us.

Minimize security risks

As the use of web-based products and services increases, users tend to use the same password across multiple websites. If a single one of these websites is hacked, this increases the possibility of a security compromise at any other website you use. With OpenID, passwords are never shared with any websites, and if a compromise does occur, you can simply change the password for your OpenID, thus immediately preventing a hacker from gaining access to your accounts at any websites you visit.

We hope you enjoy this new feature of Skylight and look forward to your feedback!
